When George Washington was a boy there was no United States. The land was here, just as it is now, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific; but nearly all of it was wild and unknown. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the Alleghany Mountains there were thirteen colonies, or great settlements. The most of the people who lived in these colonies were English people, or the children of English people; and so the King of England made their laws and appointed their governors. The newest of the colonies was Georgia, which was settled the year after George Washington was born. The oldest colony was Virginia, which had been settled one hundred and twenty-five years. It was also the richest colony, and more people were living in it than in any other.

The author of Hero Tales is James Baldwin, a self-educated pioneer of American education, born in 1841 in Indiana. Although he never attended school himself, Baldwin founded a public high school, the first school library, and a school district in his native Indiana. During the latter part of his career, he was an editor and author of school textbooks, first for Harper & Brothers, and then for the American Book Company. So prolific was Baldwin as an author and editor, it was said that at one point in time, half of all the books in American schools were either written or edited by him. Baldwin's literary legacy may have been forgotten today in the rush to substitute multiculturalism for more traditional tales taught and enjoyed in previous years. Baldwin re-told classic heroic tales for their interest to young students -- the Song of Roland, the Iliad, and the Nibelungenlied. Hero Tales is an anthology of stories compiled from Baldwin's earlier volumes, aimed at younger readers. It contains seventeen stories -- nine of Greek legends and myths, four from the Germanic legends of Siegfried and the Nibelung, and four from the Song of Roland.

Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Perhaps no other stories have ever been told so often or listened to with so much pleasure as the classic tales of ancient Greece. For many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would. They are a portion of our heritage from the distant past, and they form perhaps as important a part of our intellectual life as they did of that of the people among whom they originated.
