Step into the exciting and fantastical world of Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan. Tara, the spirited Princess of Helium, is wooed by the noble Gahan of Gathol. After an ill-timed flight from her suitor, Tara is pursued by Gahan, who re-encounters her disguised as a mercenary. They soon find themselves on the live chessboards of Manator, where what is a simple table game in the rest of the world has taken on all-too-real consequences. Now Gahan has a chance not only to win the woman he loves, but to vanquish the evil ruler of Manator who has long been a threat to the people of Gathol. This book, the fifth novel in the Barsoom series, sees Burroughs at his most imaginative. It has been called “a remarkable work, one that for imagination and for complexity of detail and settings exceeded any of Burroughs’ previous writings”.

Bold heroes, fantastical monsters, and damsels in distress - prepare for an exhilarating ride courtesy of the master of pulp fiction! John Carter, prospector and civil war veteran, finds himself mysteriously transported to the planet Mars. There, the gravitational differences between Mars, or Barsoom as it is called by its inhabitants, and Earth mean that Carter has superhuman powers. This is fortunate for him, as Mars is populated with a host of fierce creatures and strange peoples who value combat above all else. Carter begins to carve out an existence for himself in this extraordinary new world, making allies and winning respect, when his world is once again turned upside down - this time by the most beautiful woman he has ever met, the Princess Dejah Thoris. A Princess of Mars was Edgar Rice Burroughs' first novel, and the first in his famous Barsoom series.

Tarzan the Terrible, first published in 1921, is considered by devotees one of the best of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. Set during the First World War, the eighth adventure begins with Tarzan frantically looking for his wife Jane, who has been taken captive by German soldiers. His search brings him to the strangest land he has yet encountered, where dinosaurs of bygone ages coexist with strange human-like tribes. Finding that he is now a captive as well, Tarzan must find a way to survive and be reunited with the woman he loves. The usual mix of thrills and high adventure for which Burroughs' writing is known, are present in satisfying and liberal quantities. First brought to life by Burroughs in 1912, the enduring popularity of Tarzan in radio, television and film gives all the more reason to have a look at the original tales.

It was true that Tarzan and Tantor were the best of friends, and that Tarzan never yet had tasted of the flesh of the elephant; but the Gomangani evidently had slain one, and as they were eating of the flesh of their kill, Tarzan was assailed by no doubts as to the ethics of his doing likewise, should he have the opportunity. Had he known that the elephant had died of sickness several days before the blacks discovered the carcass, he might not have been so keen to partake of the feast, for Tarzan of the Apes was no carrion-eater. Hunger, however, may blunt the most epicurean taste, and Tarzan was not exactly an epicure. ~~~ Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination. Jungle Tales of Tarzan, first published in 1919, is the sixth book of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. This collection of short stories explores the life of the young Tarzan, his adventurous boyhood and teen years among the great apes and other wild creatures that were his only family. American novelist EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS (1875-1950) wrote dozens of adventure, crime, and science fiction novels that are still beloved today, including Tarzan of the Apes (1912), At the Earth's Core (1914), A Princess of Mars (1917), The Land That Time Forgot (1924), and Pirates of Venus (1934). He is reputed to have been reading a comic book when he died.

Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination. Tarzan the Untamed, first published in 1920, is the seventh book of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. Here, Tarzan swears vengeance against the murderers of his wife as the conflagration of the Great War begins to burn a swathe through this corner of British East Africa. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The gymnasium was packed as Jimmy Torrance stepped into the ring for the final event of the evening that was to decide the boxing championship of the university. Drawing to a close were the nearly four years of his college career - profitable years, Jimmy considered them, and certainly successful up to this point. In the beginning of his senior year he had captained the varsity eleven, and in the coming spring he would again sally forth upon the diamond as the star initial sacker of collegedom. His football triumphs were in the past, his continued baseball successes a foregone conclusion - if he won to-night his cup of happiness, and an unassailably dominant position among his fellows, would be assured, leaving nothing more, in so far as Jimmy reasoned, to be desired from four years attendance at one of America's oldest and most famous universities.
