This enduring novel of crime and retribution vividly reflects the social and moral values of New England in the 1840s. Nathaniel Hawthorne's gripping psychological drama concerns the Pyncheon family, a dynasty founded on pious theft, who live for generations under a dead man's curse until their house is finally exorcised by love. Hawthorne, by birth and education, was instilled with the Puritan belief in America's limitless promise. Yet - in part because of blemishes on his own family history - he also saw the darker side of the young nation. Like his twentieth-century heirs William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hawthorne peered behind propriety's facade and exposed the true human condition.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a 19th century short story writer and novelist. The Scarlet Letter is his most famous novel. The years Hawthorne spent in England were some of his happiest and most trying. President Pierce appointed Hawthorne United States Consul at Liverpool. He held this post for four years. The time Hawthorne spent in public office gave him a chance to leave writing and observe the world. His attention to exact detail transports the reader into his life in Liverpool. Stories in this collection include The Birthmark -- Young Goodman Brown -- Rappaccini's Daughter -- Mrs. Bullfrog -- The Celestial Railroad -- The Procession of Life -- Feathertop: A Moralized Legend -- Egotism; or, The Bosom Serpent -- Drowne's Wooden Image -- Roger Malvin's Burial -- The Artist of the Beautiful

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - THE first three numbers in this collection are tales of the White Hills in New Hampshire. The passages from Sketches from Memory show that Hawthorne had visited the mountains in one of his occasional rambles from home, but there are no entries in his Note Books which give accounts of such a visit. There is, however, among these notes the following interesting paragraph, written in 1840 and clearly foreshadowing The Great Stone Face: 'The semblance of a human face to be formed on the side of a mountain, or in the fracture of a small stone, by a lusus naturae [freak of nature]. The face is an object of curiosity for years or centuries, and by and by a boy is born whose features gradually assume the aspect of that portrait. At some critical juncture the resemblance is found to be perfect. A prophecy may be connected.'

Hawthorne's novel of Americans abroad, this was the first to explore the influence of European cultural ideas on American morality. Set in Rome, the story follows the aftermath of a crime of passion, dramatizing both the freedoms a new cultural model inspires and the self-censoring conformities it requires.
