Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope, (1863-1933) was a British novelist and playwright best remembered today for his short novel The Prisoner of Zenda (1894), a prequel The Heart of Princess Osra (a collection of short stories) (1896), and a sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works were all set in the contemporaneous fictional kingdom of Ruritania. His first novel was A Man of Mark (1890), and one of his most well-known works during his lifetime was The Dolly Dialogues (1894), published in the Westminster Gazette. He started writing full time after Zenda's success, completing many other novels and plays, including English Nell (based on the life of actress Nell Gwyn), and Sophy of Kravonia (1906), in a similar vein as the Zenda story. He was knighted in recognition of his contribution to British propaganda efforts during World War I. He also published an autobiographical book, Memories and Notes, in 1927. His other works include: Father Stafford (1891), Half a Hero (1893), The Indiscretion of the Duchess (1894), Frivolous Cupid (1895), The King's Mirror (1899), and Quisanté (1900).

"KISS ME," SAID THE KING'S MISTRESS "Kiss my hand now; kiss it as though I were fit for worship. It will do you no harm, and -- and perhaps -- perhaps I shall like to remember it." She bent down and kissed my forehead as I knelt before her. "Poor Simon," she whispered, as her hair brushed mine. Then her hand was gradually and gently withdrawn. I looked up to see her face; her lips were smiling but there seemed a dew on her lashes. Then she turned and left me, running swiftly over the grass, with never a look behind her. I watched till she was out of sight, and then sat down on the ground; with twitching lips and wide-open dreary eyes. Ah, for youth's happiness! Alas for its dismal woe! Thus she came into my life. Her name was Nell Gwyn, the notorious mistress of the rake king of England, Charles II. But was her heart set on our young hero, Simon Dale? Find out through the steamy haze of Restoration passion and the flash of rapiers in this exciting historical adventure/romance by the author of The Prisoner of Zenda!

Up to this moment, the Governor, Lord Eynesford, and his wife had enjoyed their reign. The Governor agreed heartily with measures introduced by the ministry; and his relations with the government and Sir Robert Perry, its chief, had been based on reciprocal liking and respect -- for they were most of them gentlemen and all of them respectable. And Lady Eynesford's discerning approval of all involved had meant a stellar season at their table. Suddenly, in the midst of an apparently peaceful session, came what the Governor considered an unhallowed combination -- between a discontented section of Perry's party and the Opposition under Medland. Now the Government was in defeat, and the resignation of Sir Robert made inevitable the rise of Mr. Medland -- a thoroughly unsatisfactory outcome -- not least to Lady Eynseford. English romantic novelist Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933), writing as Anthony Hope, and famous for his tales from the corridors of power, tells of Medford's popular but tumultuous rise -- to be threatened by riot and tragedy -- in Half a Hero.
