My attention was first called to the works of the poet Jasmin by the eulogistic articles which appeared in the Revue des Deux Mondes by De Mazade, IST odier, Yillemain, and other well-known reviewers. I afterwards read the articles by Sainte-B euve, perhaps the finest critic of French literature, on the life and history of Jasmin, in his Portraits Contemjporains as well as his admirable article on the same subject in the Causeries du Lundi, While Jasmin was still alive, a translation was published by the American poet Longfellow of The Blind Girl of Castel-C ui Ue, perhaps the best of Jasmin spoems. In his note to the translation, Longfellow said that Jasmin, the author of this beautiful poem, is to the South of France what Burns is to the South of Scotland, the representative of the heart of the people; one of those happy bards who are born with their mouths full of birds la houco )leno daouveloics).(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. A bestseller immediately after its publication in 1859, Self-Help propelled its author to fame and rapidly became one of Victorian Britain's most important statements on the allied virtues of hard work, thrift, and perseverance. Interpreted by some as a paean to personal avarice, Smiles's most celebrated book is in fact a practical and engaging tribute to the working- and lower-middle classes, in whom he identified the capacity for self-improvement and for whom he tirelessly advocated the right of social advancement. Part practical guide, part proverbial testament, part secular hagiography, this literary hybrid turns biography into an inspirational medium that awakens the reader to their own potential and instills the desire to succeed. Smiles's book is the precursor of today's motivational and self-help literature, although its vision is significantly more cosmopolitan than that of most books in an ever-expanding genre.
