It's 1938, the eve of World War II, and a pearling lugger in the Torres Strait is the place he chooses to hide. But Jack's demons follow him out to sea and rise to the surface just as surely as the pearl shell his divers collect from the dangers of the deep. Embittered, intelligent and self-destructive, Jack's only way to prove himself is to compete with, defeat and destroy the very weaknesses he fears. Set in the expansive and beautiful Coral Sea, Jack's provocative tale of a dangerous captain and his young crew at odds with the elements - and each other - holds the reader breathless until the very last page.

Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a ‘T’. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks—not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.’s small fox-terrier Montmorency. Three Men in a Boat was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian ‘clerking classes’, it hilariously captured the spirit of its age.

Harris, George, and J. are three Victorian idlers: amiable buffoons who love their food, their drink, and their bachelor home comforts. They're none too keen on work either, especially George, who sleeps at a bank in the City from 10 to 4 every day- "except on Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two." Yet their communal hypochondria has reached such a jittery level that they decide a change of scene would do them good. And why not a trip up the Thames in an open boat? What could be more relaxing than the natural simplicity of the river? As they set out armed with tobacco, whiskey, a frying pan, and a distinct lack of outdoor skills-accompanied by their faithful dog Montmorency (whose idea of heaven is fighting other dogs)-they find their idyll isn't quite all they bargained for. This is humorous story-telling at its very best.
