The last ten years have seen a marked increase in the use of supercritical fluids in analytical chemistry, mainly as mobile phases in chromatography. More recently, there has been a trend towards the application of these unusual fluids for the purpose of extraction and sample preparation. The combination of properties exhibited by supercritical fluids makes them uniquely suitable for this purpose. The automation of sample preparation using supercritical fluids will add a new dimension to existing chromatographic techniques: in addition to the time savings achieved by on-line sample preparation, there are the added benefits of improved reproduciblity and sensitivity.
