The last ten years have seen a marked increase in the use of supercritical fluids in analytical chemistry, mainly as mobile phases in chromatography. More recently, there has been a trend towards the application of these unusual fluids for the purpose of extraction and sample preparation. The combination of properties exhibited by supercritical fluids makes them uniquely suitable for this purpose. The automation of sample preparation using supercritical fluids will add a new dimension to existing chromatographic techniques: in addition to the time savings achieved by on-line sample preparation, there are the added benefits of improved reproduciblity and sensitivity. These developments will lead to the routine use of supercritical fluid extraction in analytical chemistry, which is the essence of this-book.Following a discussion of the use of supercritical fluid extraction as an off-line technique in analytical chemistry, authors concentrate on the highly important aspects of on-line sample preparation coupled to chromatography. Individual chapters, written by authorities in their fields, contain the maximum of practical advice in addition to covering appropriate theoretical detail. All relevant literature is reviewed in each chapter, providing a basic work of reference and a practical handbook in one volume. The book is directed at analytical chemists, pharmaceutical chemists and materials scientists in the industrial and academic sectors. It will also provide much useful information for instrument manufacturers.
