Summaries and Reviews
Amazon.com description: Product Description: This is the first book of paintings devoted entirely to images of the town of Mendocino, California - a village on a peninsula jutting into the Pacific 150 miles north of San Francisco - a magical place of old New England-style buildings ("Murder, She Wrote" was filmed here!), huge old watertowers, weatherbeaten barns, and wooden sidewalks, where there are no fast food franchises and no traffic lights. Artists have been drawn to Mendocino for decades. One of these was the well-known painter David Gregory, who decided to devote several years of his life to capturing the essence of Mendocino in oils and in watercolors. While his work has been called "precise and pristine", David makes the important point that these are not photographic representations, but rather images of Mendocino as he thinks of it and remembers it; of Mendocino at its best. Author, John Bear, looked at all of the seventy three paintings reproduced in this book, and let them serve as inspiration for his sometimes historical, somtimes whimsical, always entertaining text. The book, printed in full color on heavy art paper, with thread-sewn bindings, is itself a work of art. 96 pages, 73 color plates.
