Summaries and Reviews
Amazon.com description: Product Description: English summary: It is generally well-known that there was a type of flask called "Menas ampullae" that were produced at the pilgrimage site of Abu Mena and widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean world of late antiquity. While most of these clay bottles were decorated with the image of Saint Menas or his name, the production of these ampullae has received only isolated treatment in the scholarly literature until now. This study places the ceramics of Abu Mena within the context of all forms of nascent, local ceramic production in the late fifth century AD. Similar social and economic reactions to the military experiences in the seventh century and the decline of urban life in the eighth and ninth centuries underscore the necessity of such an extensive overview of local ceramic production. Concerning the treatment of local production, this volume represents a thorough investigation whose scope is as broad as it is comprehensive of its subject matter. In addition to the material from the clay kilns of Abu Mena, the excavated finds of imported ceramics are also considered in the analysis of local ceramic production and use. The late-Hellenistic and early-Roman settlements in the area that would later be the city of Abu Mena already possessed a wide variety of imported types of ceramics from other regions of Egypt and from across the Mediterranean. Even after the founding of the Christian pilgrimage site, and its accompanying town, in the first half of the fifth century there was a noticeable variety of imported ceramics. Although the preponderance of the ceramics came from other regions of Egypt, imports from further abroad were still quite significant. The extensive catalogs that list the various ceramic types are useful not only for work on Egyptian excavation sites but will serve a broad range of interests. Particularly notable are the finds of glazed ceramics, especially the so-called "Fayyumi" -ware, of which only a few examples have been published to date.
