Los cuentos fueron escritos durante el siglo XIV.Los cuentos de Canterbury es una de las obras más importantes de la literatura inglesa, y quizás la mejor obra de la Edad Media en Inglaterra. Fue la última obra de Geoffrey Chaucer. Los cuentos, escritos en inglés medio (algunos de ellos originales, otros no, dos escritos en prosa, y el resto en verso), están contenidos en una narrativa mayor y son contados por un grupo de peregrinos que viajan desde Southwark a Canterbury para visitar el templo de Santo Thomas Becket, en la Catedral de Canterbury.La obra resulta de interés, tanto para sus contemporáneos como en la actualidad, porque fue la primera obra literaria escrita en inglés; antes de Chaucer sólo se escribía en francés o en latín, por lo que sólo aquellos de mayor nivel cultural podían entenderlas.
