F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American author, famous for his Jazz Age novels and short stories, including This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and the Damned, Tales of the Jazz Age, and the Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald and his peers were part of the “Lost Generation,” a group of artists and writers who came of age at the time of the Great War. Writers during this period expressed the alienation and loss felt from the war and the subsequent rush of life during the “Roaring Twenties." Fitzgerald's first book, This Side of Paradise, earned him some money, about $6000, but it gained him enough fame to charge high prices for his short stories. Eventually Fitzgerald would become one of America's first literary super celebrities, and he and his wife Zelda were in the spotlight and the news, which was no blessing. He drank like a fiend and was constantly plagued by financial woes, and Zelda went schizophrenic - thus, Fitzgerald was forced to sell stories to magazines and Hollywood just to keep from cracking up.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby (his best known), and Tender Is the Night. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, was published posthumously. No Description Available Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was an American Jazz Age author of novels and short stories. He is regarded as one of the greatest twentieth century writers. Fitzgerald was of the self-styled "Lost Generation," Americans born in the 1890s who came of age during World War I. He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories that treat themes of youth, despair, and age.

9781843910459 | New edition (Gardners Books, June 27, 2003), cover price $12.35 | About this edition: This new edition of one of Fitzgerald's most powerful novellas also includes 'The Last of the Belles' and 'The Bridal Party'.

The Camel's Back was originally published in the "Saturday Evening Post" in 1920, this story was first published in book form in Tales of the Jazz Age in 1922. In the short introduction to this short story, Fitzgerald wrote, "I suppose that of all the stories I have ever written this one cost me the least travail and perhaps gave me the most amusement." The story, he confessed, was written "with the express purpose of buying a platinum and diamond wrist watch which cost six hundred dollars", and took seven hours to finish. Though it was the least-liked story by Fitzgerald in the volume, it was included in the O. Henry Memorial Collection (of the O. Henry Award) of 1920. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby (his most famous), and Tender Is the Night. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair. Fitzgerald's work has inspired writers ever since he was first published. The publication of The Great Gatsby prompted T. S. Eliot to write, in a letter to Fitzgerald, "[I]t seems to me to be the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James ...". Don Birnam, the protagonist of Charles Jackson's The Lost Weekend, says to himself, referring to The Great Gatsby, "There's no such thing ... as a flawless novel. But if there is, this is it." In letters written in the 1940s, J. D. Salinger expressed admiration of Fitzgerald's work, and his biographer Ian Hamilton wrote that Salinger even saw himself for some time as "Fitzgerald's successor." Richard Yates, a writer often compared to Fitzgerald, called The Great Gatsby "the most nourishing novel [he] read ... a miracle of talent ... a triumph of technique." It was written in a New York Times editorial after his death that Fitzgerald "was better than he knew, for in fact and in the literary sense he invented a generation ... He might have interpreted them and even guided them, as in their middle years they saw a different and nobler freedom threatened with destruction."
